Merci de votre commentaire. Staffel 2.

The Cimmerian continues his adventures, and for a man of the Northern mountains spends a great deal of time in the desert.

He follows his normal path, either joining a standing army as a mercenary captain or leading a band of brigands in looting and stealing.

Conan, as can also be seen in his gambling, isn't the luckiest of men. He invariably ends up on the losing side and i "Conan, what will we do if they keep coming back to life?

He invariably ends up on the losing side and is generally the lone survivor of his massacred band. But he gets through it, finds another group to link up with, and along the way picks up a comely wench or beauteous queen or sexy witch who crave the embrace of his steely thews.

Then he dumps them before the next story. Noteable this time is that Conan actually achieves his goal and becomes a king.

It is just his kind of kingdom, full of murder and mayhem and violence and Conan is living the happiest days of his life.

Even then he can't be satisfied. In a revealing dialogue, Conan, when he has all the wine, women, and gold he could ever ask for, seeks to attack the Western tribes.

Asked what he would do after conquering them Conan states he would conquer the Eastern tribes. Then the South, and finally the North.

Then he might consider retirement. There are demons and magicians and unclimbable mountains and endless deserts, large scale battles and individual combat, mythical cities and an ocean cruise to an unknown isle.

All along Conan is at his best and, except the part where he is nearly flayed to death, exceptionally cheery throughout.

He only worries about the next source of plunder and adventure, not letting the little troubles of life get in his way.

Now he's dead and we're alive. Let's move. There have been many a decade, many a Conan comic at a number of publishers, many an issue of the Savage Sword of Conan magazine and now comic , and many other Conan-related movies, games and media come out and eagerly devoured since I first read this collection of Conan stories waay back when.

It's good to return to the source, and Howard's original stories are just as gore-drenched, frenetic, and erotically charged as I remember them.

The Frazetta covers are just as compelling. The four storie There have been many a decade, many a Conan comic at a number of publishers, many an issue of the Savage Sword of Conan magazine and now comic , and many other Conan-related movies, games and media come out and eagerly devoured since I first read this collection of Conan stories waay back when.

The four stories in this collection relate Conan at the height of his physical power, and they are classics.

As pointed out many a time, but for the fantasy setting and the famous protagonist, they would very well have been Lovecraftian stories, with their references to cosmic horror, and an indifference to human endeavour, mad cults and frothing madness.

The one thing I did pick up on that irked me this time around is Conan being described as 'the Barachan' in 'Pool of the Black One', in reference to his pirating days, and 'Conan of Ghor' by Yasmina in 'The People of the Black Circle'.

He is elsewhere described as coming from Cimmeria but not actually referred to as 'Conan the Cimmerian' at least in this first book. I'll keep an eye out.

A quick google doesn't seem to shed any light on where Ghor is, or whether it is a village, city or country. I am tempted just to burn through the rest of the Howard Conan stories one after the other, but am also of a mind to read an unread book in between each re-visit to the modern myth that is Conan.

Time will tell how long this re-visit will last, but I have thoroughly enjoyed my re-immersion into that wild time dreamed of between the sinking of Atlantis and the beginnings of recorded history.

Sep 19, D. This is one of the better collection of Conan stories. The best one is the last story, "The Pool of the Black One. These stories are very sexist, so if you bristle at that sort of thing, stay away, but if you can get past that, it's really great stuff, very much like Lovecraft.

Of course, it was written in the early 's, so that explains the sexism. These stores are also very violent, fantastic, and horrifying.

What makes the This is one of the better collection of Conan stories. What makes the stories great is that they could be put into any setting--it doesn't have to be fantasy though it does have to be supernatural.

These stories could have been set in a Lovecraft world just as easily. I had mixed feeling about this book. There are some interesting ideas.

In particular, notes of H. P Lovecraft can be felt in the otherworldliness of some of the monstrosities that Conan battles.

However, there are some tedious themes particularly around the endless precession of wobbly, wailing women who inevitably find Conan sexually irresistible that perhaps show the age of the tales.

I also found it hard to symapthise with the protagonist, who is basically a greedy, bloodthirsty thief and mu I had mixed feeling about this book.

I also found it hard to symapthise with the protagonist, who is basically a greedy, bloodthirsty thief and murderer.

This is one of the better collections. Only the third story is a reconstruction from one of Howard's outlines, the rest are undiluted and glorious.

I'd say I don't know who looks at a Howard story and thinks "Ah, this needs more complex racial hierarchy nonsense!

Sprague De Camp, apparently! The important thing is now I'm all caught up for the next episode of This is one of the better collections.

The important thing is now I'm all caught up for the next episode of The Appendix N podcast, which I heartily recommend. After my last re-read of R.

Yet, here I find myself again. For all R. Yet, herein is a strange conundrum. Strange and complicated, that.

For what it is, which is that genre of violent, mysoginistic adventures that read like a fever dream of creativity, there is probably none better.

A good collection of the adventures of Conan. It's a great tragedy when great writers die young. Inevitably, they leave behind reams of notes.

However, that doesn't necessarily imply that the stuff in those notes is something that was ever intended to be published in its existing form.

This book features several stories, all written by De Camp on the basis of Howard's notes, all pretty similar to each other.

I also can't help thinking that the last two at the least were originally different drafts of the same tale. So, Conan.

Blue eyes, black hair, white skin specifically mentioned each time, in case an inattentive reader think him a moor , goes somewhere, beats up a lot of black people although sometimes others too , rescues a shapely girl who is utterly incapable of doing anything on her own, and about whom we never hear anything ever again.

If you read the original Howardian Conan sagas, he actually had quite a few strong female characters - Belit for instance is mentioned multiple times in this book, but only in the inter-story notes Repetitive phrasing, the same similes and metaphors occurring over and over, somewhat exciting action that is not particularly internally consistent or otherwise sensible Conan, one step ahead of an army of black folks, jumps up a ledge!

Onto a group of armed and clearly very capable killers. And nothing much happens to him, he just kills a dozen or two and moves on.

Also, considering the quantity and quality of his adventures, one has to wonder why the entire continent isn't yet overrun with hordes of very brawny blue-eyed kids.

Like many this was my first taste of Conan and RE Howard, way back in I didn't totally get it then. My only taste of heroic fantasy was David Gemmel.

I found Conan too gritty, too dark. I could not as a teenager get to grips with a hero who could cold-bloodily kill a man who'd rescued him in order to steal his ship, his woman and his crew - this was no clean cut Like many this was my first taste of Conan and RE Howard, way back in I could not as a teenager get to grips with a hero who could cold-bloodily kill a man who'd rescued him in order to steal his ship, his woman and his crew - this was no clean cut hero, no paladin.

But that I later realised is the point. He's a barbarian! Nearly thirty years later these are the stories I come back to again and again.

The shades of grey, the 'weird' 'pulpy' language and the world so close to ours yet not is a place I love to frequent.

The other three stories are all excellent, Drums of Tombalku is interesting in that it's written pretty much from another character's perspective, with Conan Stepping in.

The first half of this story is all REH from an unfinished draft, second half is finished by SLC and it's good - I genuinely don't understand the critical comments.

The other two stories are superb classic REH. While the opener, which is also the longest story in this collection , 'The People Of the Black Circle' is a full on adventure of magic, violence and passion.

The cover of course has to be mentioned This is Conan! Of the four stories, I'd probably rate the slithering shadow highest, followed by the people of the black circle by far the longest , the pool of the black one and then the drums of tombalku.

The last of which didn't really feel like it went anywhere. But the others were fairly solid. Short but solid. Sep 08, G. Every so often I read this Robert E.

Howard collection of Conan stories as I do other Howard collections and wonder again why the movie industry refuses to stick to the source material.

These adventures are thrilling, and stand alone without the predictable 'origin' or narrative alterations that taint the cinematic treatments of the Conan character.

These are kind of getting old hat by book 5. Story lines are pretty similar. Unfortunately there is quite a bit of editing and stories inserted wholesale by other authors.

Considering stopping my run on this series and checking out one of the collections of just Robert E. Howard stories about Conan. Still entertaining though.

Solid 3 stars. Another of the heavily edited collections of Robert E. Howards stories. I am a purist when it comes to a writers works.

I know some of these stories are no longer PC but they should be read as Howard wrote them and understood that he wrote in another period.

Don't read this book unless you just can't find any others of Howard's unedited books to read. Message me if you need a list of what is good from this awesome fantasy and action writer.

You just can't go wrong with Conan! Each story is creative and different enough that I've read more than twenty of the original Robert E.

Howard stories in a row at one point and never tired of them. It reminds me of the Jon Carter series, except with a different backdrop and protagonist.

This book is a great collection, and I wish I had the other books in this series. Conan is awesome, and Robert E. Howard is a great writer.

I cant believe he pumped all these stories out before shouting himself at the age of I didn't think I was an action adventure fan till these stories got my heart racing.

If only someone had put this book in my hand when I was Adjective and action heavy making for fast and fun reading.

I really enjoyed these stories, because they were as pulp as I had expected and hoped. Strangely, the one dimensional, simple characters felt refreshing.

I learned nothing from this book. I already knew Conan was a badass. Readers also enjoyed. About Robert E. Robert Ervin Howard was an American pulp writer of fantasy, horror, historical adventure, boxing, western, and detective fiction.

Howard wrote "over three-hundred stories and seven-hundred poems of raw power and unbridled emotion" and is especially noted for his memorable depictions of "a sombre universe of swashbuckling adventure and darkling horror.

Conan the Barbarian, a literary icon whose pop-culture imprint can only be compared to such icons as Tarzan of the Apes, Count Dracula, Sherlock Holmes, and James Bond.
